Our Journey

 
1967 Edmonton South Presbytery constitute Southminster United Church, April 23 with Rev. Don Hamilton, Minister.
   
1968 Southern Homes project was
   
1969 Location moved from Westbrook School to Vernon Barford School.
Operation Friendship project was established.
   
1974 Rev. Mary Thomas was called.
   
1977 Steinhauer United Church established March 6, in D.S. McKenzie School, then moved to the newly-opened Steinhauer School.
   
1979 Dorothy Mundle and Carolyn Bouey-Shank were hired to develop a locally-based Sunday School curriculum for children to reflect the adult congregations's justice oriented theology.
   
1981 Dorothy Mundle was called to join staff as Diaconal Minister.
   
1984 Rev. Clair Woodbury was called to join Dorothy in a new team ministry.
   
1985 Steinhauer United worship services and Pastoral Charge offices move into Ermineskin Community Centre.
   
1989 A year of transition, with Interim Minister, Rev. Charles Hickman.
   
1990 New team ministry called: Rev. Ross Smillie and Diaconal Minister Lynda Gow.
   
1992 25th Anniversary celebrated.
   
1993 The two congregations amalgamated as Southminster-Steinhauer United Church; this visioning included the concept of a church building.
   
1994 Rev. Bob Hetherington was called.
   
1995 Capital Fund Campaign, “Growing Together, Reaching Out”.
   
1998 Land was purchased in Yellowbird.
   
1999 Capital Campaign “Vision 2001” was launched.
Southminster-Steinhauer declared itself an Affirming Congregation
   
2000 Rev. Marg Archibald was called to join Bob in a new team ministry.
   
2001 New facility was celebrated and dedicated on March 3rd and 4th, 2001.
   
2003 Rev. Bob Hetherington retired in June
   
2003 Rev. Nancy Steeves was called to form new team ministry in August.
   
2003 Rev. Marg Archibald resigned in December
   
2004 Alena Helgeson as Interim Congregational Worker and Jim Spiers as Interim Educational Development Worker join Nancy Steeves in team ministry.
   
2005 Outreach projects included sponsorship of Ethiopian refugees; drama and music productions were shared with other congregations; men's choir began; an instrumental ensemble began participation in worship
   
2006 Jim Spiers was appointed to a staff position on an ongoing basis
Jacqueline Switzer was appointed as Staff Associate
   
2007 Southminster-Steinhauer 40th Anniversary was celebrated.
Circle Group children completed their African Drums project.
